Olga Kikou, Director of Animal Advocacy & Food Transition, emphasised that the solution lies not only in reducing antibiotic use, but also in transitioning towards better farming systems: “The solution is not simply fewer antibiotics. The solution is better farming systems. If we truly want to tackle antimicrobial resistance, we need to shift our approach from treatment to prevention. Prevention starts with better conditions for animals,” she said.

Olga Kikou, Director of Animal Advocacy & Food Transition, told Animals Today: “The Commission’s letter clearly demonstrates that scientific evidence alone is not sufficient to bring about animal welfare reform in the EU. Although the Commission is fully aware of EFSA’s conclusion that stunning with high concentrations of CO₂ causes pain, fear and respiratory distress, it refuses to take the obvious step of removing this inhumane method from the list of permitted stunning techniques.
