Olga Kikou, Director of Animal Advocacy & Food Transition, told Animals Today: “The Commission’s letter clearly demonstrates that scientific evidence alone is not sufficient to bring about animal welfare reform in the EU. Although the Commission is fully aware of EFSA’s conclusion that stunning with high concentrations of CO₂ causes pain, fear, and respiratory distress, it refuses to take the obvious step of removing this inhumane method from the list of permitted stunning techniques.
