Animal Advocacy & Food Transition, the Cyprus University of Technology and Danish Plant-Based Diplomacy hosted a high-level event in Nicosia on 20 February, under the Cyprus and Danish agriculture ministries, on how Europe can grow its plant-based food sector.
Speakers pointed to Denmark’s 2023 Action Plan as a model, a value-chain approach spanning farmers, industry and research, while noting that Cyprus faces its own pressures: climate change, water scarcity and heavy reliance on food imports, alongside a Mediterranean diet tradition well placed to lead a shift towards more plant-based diets.
“Scaling this transition requires clear policy frameworks, infrastructure investment and continued support for innovation,” said Dana Wilson of FAIRR.
AAFT is calling on the European Commission to develop a European Action Plan for Plant-Based Foods and a broader protein diversification strategy, building on Denmark’s example and extending it to other Member States.
